CHAdeMO in Malaysia: Charging a Japan-Spec EV in 2026

5 min read

Short answer: Malaysia's public DC fast-charging network is built around CCS2. A CHAdeMO car cannot plug into it directly. For DC you need a CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adaptor, and it will not work with every charger. For AC charging at home a standard Type 2 wallbox is still the right buy, plus a Type 2-to-Type 1 adaptor if your car has a J1772 inlet.

Why this question comes up in Malaysia and not in Europe

Malaysia standardised on Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, the same pairing as Europe, the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Every EV sold new here follows it. CHAdeMO is the Japanese DC standard, and it arrives in Malaysia the same way Japan-spec cars do: through reconditioned and grey imports. The Nissan Leaf is the obvious one, and there are Japan-spec PHEVs and a handful of Japan-spec premium cars too.

So the owner of a recond Leaf ends up with a car that charges perfectly well at home and cannot use a single public DC charger in the country without hardware in between. That is the gap this page is about.

Which connector does your car actually have?

Open the charge flap and look. A Type 1 (SAE J1772) AC inlet is a round five-pin plug with a flat top and a latch on the outside. A Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) inlet is wider, with a flat top edge and seven pins. CHAdeMO is the large round DC socket with two fat pins and a ring of small ones; CCS2 is a Type 2 inlet with two extra large DC pins added underneath it.

What Malaysian public chargers have

What you need

Type 2 AC + CCS2 DC (almost every EV sold new here: Proton e.MAS, BYD, Tesla, Zeekr, Jaecoo, MG)

Type 2 AC, CCS2 DC

Nothing. Plug straight in.

Type 1 AC (J1772) + CHAdeMO DC (reconditioned Nissan Leaf, many Japan-spec imports)

Type 2 AC, CCS2 DC

A Type 2-to-Type 1 adaptor for AC, and a CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adaptor for DC.

Type 1 AC only (older PHEVs such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in some specs)

Type 2 AC

A Type 2-to-Type 1 adaptor. No DC charging at all.

Type 2 AC + CHAdeMO DC (Japan-spec Porsche Taycan and similar grey imports)

Type 2 AC, CCS2 DC

Nothing for AC. A CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adaptor for DC.

If you are not sure, our Malaysia EV charging connector types guide has photographs of each one, and the Type 1 vs Type 2 explainer covers the AC side in more detail.

DC fast charging a CHAdeMO car: what an adaptor really does

A DC adaptor is not a passive lump of copper. CHAdeMO and CCS2 talk to the car over different communication protocols, so an adaptor has to translate between them while high-voltage DC flows through it. That is why these units cost what they cost, why they carry firmware, and why no honest seller will promise they work with every charger.

EvGuru CCS2 to CHAdeMO DC adaptor for Japan-spec electric vehicles in Malaysia
EvGuru's CCS2-to-CHAdeMO DC adaptor lets a CHAdeMO car use Malaysia's CCS2 public chargers.

Our CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adaptor is RM4,900. It is built to IEC 62752, rated IP54, uses a TPE cable sheath and carries a one-year warranty. We state plainly what we know about it:

  • It has been tested on a Japan-spec Porsche Taycan.

  • It is reported to work with most ABB and Kempower DC chargers, which covers a lot of JOMCHARGE, GENTARI, DC HANDAL and SHELL RECHARGE sites.

  • It may or may not communicate correctly with DC chargers from other manufacturers.

  • It needs occasional firmware updates to stay compatible with different cars, and we provide guidance on doing them.

If you road-trip constantly and your car is CHAdeMO, that honesty matters more than a spec sheet. The adaptor turns a large share of Malaysia's DC network from unusable into usable. It does not turn all of it into usable, and you should plan long drives around chargers you have already proved work with your car.

The cheaper answer for most CHAdeMO owners: charge at home on AC

Most of the pain here disappears if you stop relying on public DC. A reconditioned Leaf has a small battery by 2026 standards, and an overnight AC charge at home covers normal Klang Valley driving several times over. AC charging is also gentler on a battery that has already done years of service.

Guru Swift Advance 7kW Type 2 home EV wallbox charger installed in Malaysia
A standard Type 2 wallbox is still the right home charger for a Type 1 car, with an adaptor on the end.

Buy the normal Type 2 wallbox. The Guru Swift Advance 7kW / 22kW is the standard choice, and it stays useful when you replace the car with something CCS2. Then add a Type 2-to-Type 1 adaptor (built to IEC 62752 and IEC 61851, IP55 in working conditions — check the current price on the product page) for the car end. Do not buy a Type 1 wallbox: you would be fitting obsolete hardware to your wall for the sake of one car.

To see what an overnight charge actually gives you, put your battery size into the EV charging time calculator.

What people actually ask

These are the real searches landing on EvGuru from Malaysia over the last 90 days, ranked by how often they appear in our Search Console data. Until now they arrived on a bare product page with no explanation, which is why this article exists.

  • "chademo charger" and "chademo charger malaysia" — by far the most common; people want to know whether CHAdeMO exists here at all.

  • "ccs2 charger" — the mirror image: owners checking which standard the public network uses.

  • "leaf charger type" and "nissan leaf charger plug type" — Leaf owners identifying their own inlet.

  • "ccs2 to chademo adapter price" — people who already know the answer and want the cost.

  • "chademo charger near me" — the question an adaptor is meant to make unnecessary.

  • "how much does it cost to charge a nissan leaf at a charging station" — running cost, not hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a CCS2 public charger with a Nissan Leaf in Malaysia?

Not directly. The Leaf's DC inlet is CHAdeMO and Malaysian public DC chargers are CCS2. With a CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adaptor you can use many of them, but not guaranteed all of them — compatibility depends on the charger's manufacturer and the adaptor's firmware.

Is there a CHAdeMO-to-CCS2 adaptor so my CCS2 car can use a CHAdeMO charger?

That direction is not a product we sell, and in Malaysia it would solve nothing: there is almost no CHAdeMO public infrastructure here to use. The adaptor demand runs the other way.

Do I need an adaptor to charge a Type 1 car at home?

Yes, if you install a Type 2 wallbox, which is what you should install. A Type 2-to-Type 1 adaptor sits between the wallbox cable and the car. It is a one-off cost and it keeps your wall hardware current.

Will using an adaptor damage my car or void anything?

A properly certified adaptor used within its ratings is doing exactly what the standards it is built to were written for. The practical risks are mechanical rather than electrical: do not let the adaptor hang unsupported off the car's inlet, keep the contacts clean and dry, and stop immediately if a charging session behaves oddly.

Is frequent DC fast charging bad for an older imported battery?

Heat is the issue, and an older Leaf has limited battery cooling. We cover the general picture in Is DC fast charging bad for your EV battery?. For a used Japan-spec import, AC charging at home overnight is the kinder default and DC is best kept for journeys.

Does EvGuru ship these adaptors outside Malaysia?

Yes. Shipping is free and EvGuru pays all import duties and taxes, so the price you see is the price you pay. Returns are 30 days for any reason with no restocking fee; international return postage is the customer's cost.
