2026 Malaysia EV Road Tax: The Official Guide & Charging Requirements

Starting January 1, 2026, Malaysia moves to a transparent, power-based (kW) road tax structure. While the road tax "holiday" is ending, these new rates are approximately 85% cheaper than previous petrol equivalents, making 2026 the best time to switch to electric.

Part 2: How is the 2026 Road Tax Calculated?

To understand correctly, it is important to understand that the Ministry of Transport uses a "Base + Incremental" system.

The 3-Step Formula:

  1. Identify the Power Group: Your car falls into one of 11 groups based on its kW rating.

  2. Start with the Base Price: Each group has a base price that covers the first 10kW of that group.

  3. Add Incremental Fees: For every started 9.99kW (10kW) block beyond the base, a fixed fee is added.

Example: Proton e.MAS 7 (160 kW)

  • Group B Range: 100.001kW to 210kW.

  • Base Price: RM 80 (This covers up to 110kW).

  • Excess Power: 160kW - 110kW = 50kW.

  • Incremental Blocks: 50kW ÷ 10kW = 5 blocks.

  • Calculation: RM 80 + (5 blocks x RM 20) = RM 180 Total.

Example: Proton e.MAS 5 Prime (58 kW)

  • Group A Range: 0kW to 100kW.

  • Base Price: RM 20 (This covers up to 50kW).

  • Excess Power: 58kW - 50kW = 8kW.

  • Incremental Blocks: 8kW ÷ 10kW = 0.8 (rounded up to 1 block).

  • Calculation: RM 20 + (1 block x RM 10) = RM 30 Total.

Part 3: 2026 Safety & Installation Standards

While your road tax is lower, the power output of these vehicles (especially luxury models like the Denza D9) requires high-performance charging infrastructure.

EvGuru Professional Protocols:

  • RCD Type B: Mandatory for all shared and private installations to protect against DC leakage.

  • Load Management: Essential for terrace homes to ensure your charger doesn't trip your house main breaker during peak use.

  • Surge Protection: Shielding your EV’s onboard computer from Malaysia's frequent lightning strikes.
