Malaysia EV Charging Connector Types Explained: Which Cars Use What (2026)

6 min read

Malaysia runs on two connector families: Type 2 for AC (home and public slow charging) and CCS2 or CHAdeMO for DC fast charging. Almost every EV sold new in Malaysia since 2022 - Proton e.MAS 7, BYD, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia and others - arrives with a Type 2 AC port and CCS2 DC port natively, so no adapter is needed. The exceptions are recon Japanese imports and pre-2018 American-spec EVs, which often use Type 1 AC and CHAdeMO DC instead.

The 60-Second Answer: Which Connector Does Your Car Use?

  • New EVs sold in Malaysia (Proton e.MAS 7, BYD Atto 3/Dolphin/Seal, Tesla Model 3/Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Volvo EX30, smart #1, MINI Cooper SE): Type 2 AC port, CCS2 DC port - plugs straight into any EVGuru wallbox, no adapter.

  • Recon Nissan Leaf and most pre-2018 Japanese or American imports: Type 1 AC port, CHAdeMO DC port - needs a Type 1-to-Type 2 adapter for home and public AC charging.

  • Home wallboxes in Malaysia are always Type 2 AC, regardless of what DC fast-charge port your car has. The DC port only matters at public rapid chargers.

Why This Question Confuses So Many Buyers

Most Malaysian buyers googling connector types are really asking two separate questions at once: what plugs into my home charger, and what fits the DC fast charger at the mall. These are different standards governed by different charging modes, and a car can mix and match - a Type 1 AC port with a CHAdeMO DC port is a common combination on older Japanese EVs.

According to Suruhanjaya Tenaga's compliance standard as documented by EvGuru, Type 2 connectors have an inbuilt locking mechanism for safety and can carry both single-phase and three-phase power, which is why Type 1 was never adopted for Malaysian charging infrastructure.

Malaysia's Official Connector Standards by Charging Mode

Charging Mode

Connector Allowed in Malaysia

Where You'll See It

Mode 2 / Mode 3 (AC)

Type 2 only

Home wallbox, condo bay, office car park

Mode 4 (DC)

CCS2 or CHAdeMO only

Highway rest stops, malls, DC fast-charging hubs

For Mode 2 and 3 charging, only Type 2 connectors are allowed in the EV charging system, and for Mode 4 charging only CCS Type 2 and CHAdeMO connectors are permitted, per the national compliance standard documented on EvGuru's own plug-type guide. Mode 1 charging - plugging straight into a household 13A socket - is not a recognised standard for sustained EV charging in Malaysia, which is exactly why a proper wallbox with a licensed Wireman and Type B RCD matters.

Proton's own specifications confirm the e.MAS 7 uses a Type 2 port for AC charging across both Prime and Premium variants, with an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, and a CCS2 port for DC fast charging - it plugs straight into any Guru Swift Advance wallbox with zero adapter needed. The Nissan Leaf is the clearest counter-example sold in Malaysia: it uses a Type 1 connector and CHAdeMO connector for fast charging, which puts it in a different category from almost every other EV on the road here.

Do You Need an Adapter?

What EvGuru Supplies

Type 2 AC (most 2022+ EVs)

No

Guru Swift or Guru Swift Advance wallbox, Type 2 cable

Type 1 AC (recon imports, pre-2018 EVs)

Yes, for home and public AC charging

Type 1-to-Type 2 adapter - EvGuru is Malaysia's only seller

CHAdeMO DC (Nissan Leaf)

Only if the station is CCS2-only

Not applicable at home - home charging is always AC

If you own a Type 1 car, you will need a Type 1-to-Type 2 adaptor to charge at most stations and at any Type 2 home wallbox, since almost all public and residential chargers in Malaysia come fitted with Type 2 sockets or cables. EvGuru carries this adapter as the only Malaysian seller, and it pairs with any charger on our charger hub - this is not a criticism of Type 1 cars, it is simply a regional standards gap that a RM-range adapter solves permanently.

The one mistake to avoid: assuming your car's DC fast-charge port (CCS2 or CHAdeMO) decides what home charger you need. It doesn't. Every home wallbox in Malaysia, including EvGuru's own Guru Swift range, outputs Type 2 AC only - your DC port only comes into play at public rapid chargers, never at home.

Homeowner vs JMB/Commercial: What Changes

Property Type

Recommended Setup

Typical Install

Landed home

Single or three-phase Type 2 wallbox, dedicated circuit

From RM1,590 single-phase / from RM1,650 three-phase

Condo / JMB shared bay

Tethered Type 2 wallbox, standardised socket policy

Quoted per project

Office / commercial car park

Mixed Type 2 AC plus optional CCS2 DC fast units

Quoted per project

Landed homeowners rarely need to think about connector compatibility at all - follow our landed-home installation guide and pick single-phase or three-phase based on your car's onboard charger. Condo committees have a different job: standardise on Type 2 sockets across shared bays so every resident's car works without a personal adapter, which our condo and JMB page covers in detail.

Commercial operators running car parks for tenants or customers should plan for Type 2 AC as the default and only add CCS2 DC fast units where turnover genuinely demands it, since DC hardware costs more to install and maintain. Commercial EV charging installations also remain eligible for the Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) until 31 December 2026 - see our commercial and car park solutions page for how that applies to your project.

FAQ

Is Type 1 connector allowed in Malaysia?

Type 1 connectors are not part of Malaysia's charging infrastructure standard because they lack a locking mechanism and only carry single-phase power, unlike Type 2 which is required for both Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging. If your car has a Type 1 port, you will need an adapter to use Malaysian home and public Type 2 chargers - your car itself is perfectly legal to drive and own.

Can I use a CCS2 cable on a CHAdeMO car?

No. CCS2 and CHAdeMO are physically different DC connectors and are not interchangeable without a dedicated CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adapter, which is a public-charging accessory, not something used for home charging. At home, your car always charges over its AC Type 1 or Type 2 port regardless of which DC standard it uses in public.

What connector port does the Proton e.MAS 7 use?

The Proton e.MAS 7 uses a standard Type 2 port for AC charging on both Prime and Premium variants, compatible with every Type 2 wallbox including EvGuru's Guru Swift and Guru Swift Advance, and a CCS2 port for DC fast charging. No adapter is needed for home installation or Malaysian public Type 2 chargers.

Will my condo's shared EV charger fit my car?

If your car is a 2022-or-newer model sold through an official Malaysian distributor, yes - almost all of them use Type 2 AC ports, which is the standard every condo charger in Malaysia is required to use for Mode 2 and 3 charging. Older recon imports with Type 1 ports will need to bring their own adapter, since the building's shared infrastructure is built around Type 2.

Do I need a different home charger for CCS2 versus CHAdeMO cars?

No. Home wallboxes only handle AC charging through a Type 2 port, so whether your car's DC fast-charge standard is CCS2 or CHAdeMO makes zero difference to which home charger you buy. The DC port only matters when you're using a public rapid charger, never for overnight home charging.
