EV Charging in Ipoh and Perak: What to Expect in 2026

If you drive an EV in Ipoh or anywhere in Perak, the short answer is that public charging is now good enough for daily life and for North-South Expressway stops, but it is not dense enough to replace charging at home. Perak's public network is concentrated in Ipoh city, around Sunway City and the hotels and malls near the expressway, with DC fast charging available but still a thin grid outside the city. Almost every EV sold in Malaysia uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, so a home wallbox plus occasional DC top-ups is the normal pattern here.

What you can verify today

Connector standards: Type 2 (IEC 62196) for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Same standards as Europe, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand — so a cable or charger bought for those markets fits a Malaysian EV.

DC fast charging in Ipoh: MH Hotel Ipoh has a 120kW Autel DC charger with two CCS2 nozzles, minutes from the northbound North-South Expressway exits for Ipoh, Tambun and Tanjung Rambutan. It takes a tap of a credit or debit card at the terminal, with no app install required, and can also be activated through JomCharge or ChargEV. Source: DC Handal.

Where Ipoh charging clusters: Sunway City Ipoh, city-centre malls and hotels. Coverage thins quickly once you leave Ipoh for Taiping, Teluk Intan or Lenggong, so plan inter-town trips around a known DC stop rather than assuming one will appear.

Home charging: A 7kW single-phase wallbox fills a typical Malaysian EV battery overnight. 11kW or 22kW needs three-phase supply, which most Malaysian landed homes do not have as standard.

What we do not claim: we do not publish Perak-specific tariffs or charging prices here, because public DC rates differ by operator and change without notice. Check the rate in the operator's own app before you plug in.

Charging at home in Ipoh and Perak

Most Perak EV owners live in landed homes, which is the easiest case: a single-phase 7kW wallbox on its own circuit, with an ST-licensed contractor doing the work and the paperwork. If you are deciding whether you need one at all, see which EVs really need a home charger in Malaysia.

Condominium and apartment owners in Ipoh face the usual problem: the parking bay is not theirs and the management committee has to agree. That process is the same across Malaysia and is covered in our guide to EV charging in apartments and condos.

Can you live in Perak without a home charger?

You can, but it takes planning. A driver relying only on public charging in Ipoh is dependent on a small number of DC sites and on those sites being free when needed. We set out the realistic version of that life in can you charge an EV without a home charger.

Driving the North-South Expressway through Perak

Perak sits in the middle of the Kuala Lumpur–Penang run, so most charging stops here are made by people passing through rather than living here. Treat Ipoh as the reliable mid-route stop and do not count on a charger being available at a single specific layby. Travelling further south, our notes on EV charging in Johor Bahru follow the same shape.

What to buy, and what it costs to ship

For Type 2 and CCS2 markets, the hardware is the same whether you are in Ipoh or Europe. EvGuru ships worldwide with free shipping and pays all import duties and taxes, so the price shown is the final price, and returns are accepted within 30 days. Our full range is in the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Is there DC fast charging in Ipoh?

Yes. MH Hotel Ipoh runs a 120kW Autel DC charger with two CCS2 nozzles, close to the northbound expressway exits for Ipoh, Tambun and Tanjung Rambutan, and it accepts a card tap at the terminal as well as JomCharge and ChargEV activation.

Which plug do I need for an EV in Perak?

Type 2 for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Type 1 (J1772) is a US and Canada standard and is not what Malaysian EVs use, apart from a few older imports.

Do I need three-phase power for a home charger?

Not for 7kW, which is single-phase and enough to charge overnight. 11kW and 22kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which most Perak landed homes do not have without an upgrade.

How long does a 7kW charger take?

Roughly overnight for a typical Malaysian EV battery from a low state of charge. A DC fast charger does the same job in well under an hour, which is why DC is for travel and AC is for home.

Can I charge my EV at a condo in Ipoh?

Only with the management committee's agreement, because the parking bay and the building's electrical supply are not yours to alter. Approach it as a building decision, not a purchase.

Is public charging enough if I live in Ipoh?

For light use, yes. For daily commuting, a home wallbox is still the cheaper and more reliable option, with public DC used for trips.
